Using AI to make Life Ed’s knowledge more discoverable

How we helped Life Education Trust take their first AI steps with confidence

What we delivered

  • A collaborative discovery process to identify the most impactful uses of AI

  • A working prototype combining modern AI technologies to make finding educational resources easier

  • Validation that AI can be used to successfully navigate Life Education Trust's unique content and context

  • Clear next steps for implementing AI responsibly and effectively

From possibilities to practical solutions, powered by AI

In a world of rapid technological change, how do you evolve a trusted institution? Life Education Trust came to us with this challenge, wanting to understand how emerging technologies could transform their operations and better serve Aotearoa's tamariki. AI offered exciting possibilities, but they needed a trusted partner to help them navigate the complex landscape and find practical ways forward.

We first focused on understanding Life Education Trust's challenges and objectives through collaborative workshops. One challenge stood out: maintaining, and maximising the utility of, their extensive library of educational resources. Here was a perfect opportunity to demonstrate how AI could create immediate value while building confidence for future innovations.

Instructing AI to act like an educator

We knew AI could help – but could it use the specific educational concepts and terminology that Life Education Trust needs? Our experiment combined several modern AI technologies:

  • Vector stores to create an AI searchable knowledge base of Life Ed’s resources

  • Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to provide accurate, contextual search results

  • Large Language Models to interpret natural language queries

  • Prompt engineering to provide context of Life Education Trust's unique framework of Strands and Concepts, control the agent persona, direct the format of any responses, and define acceptable topics

  • Specialised AI agents to enhance resource descriptions and metadata, making content more discoverable

The results exceeded expectations. Unlike clunky traditional search engines, our prototype could find relevant teaching resources in seconds, understanding complex queries like "find resources about healthy relationships suitable for Year 8 students". The prototype showed how AI could transform manual searching into intelligent discovery – a glimpse of how technology could give educators more time for what matters most: teaching.

Building trust through transparency

Throughout the experiment, we worked side by side with Life Education Trust, sharing our process and learnings. And by using their own educational content in the demonstration, educators could see exactly how AI would help them in their day-to-day work.

Sparking innovation beyond a prototype

The real magic happened at Life Education Trust's annual Educator Conference in Auckland where we demonstrated the prototype and shared our journey of discovery. More than just showing what AI could do, we helped educators understand how it could transform their daily work, sparking conversations about possibilities beyond our initial experiment.

Small steps toward big impact

This initial experiment proved that AI could be a powerful tool for Life Education Trust, making their valuable educational resources more accessible. More importantly, it showed how taking small, focused steps with AI can help organisations understand the real potential of this transformative technology. Through PaperKite identifying a key business challenge and then designing a specific, hands-on experiment, Life Education Trust gained clarity on where and how AI could make the biggest difference to their work.

By working together, we helped Life Education Trust move from uncertainty to confidence, giving them a clear vision for how AI can support their educators and benefit Aotearoa's tamariki.
